The researchers from Michigan Tech are back at work in Keweenaw County. This summer students are digging at the ruins of the Phoenix Hotel in downtown Eagle River. We will answer two questions: 1. Are there intact archaeological deposits at the Phoenix Hotel site? 2. Can those deposits teach us important things about life in different communities in Eagle River during the 50 years of the Keweenaw’s mining boom? The Phoenix Hotel was marketed as the Keweenaw’s grand hotel and was also the workplace for many African American residents. Come hear about this summer’s discoveries!
