Join us as we raise a new flag on the mast of the Soo River Trader in celebration of our opening day.
The remote and isolated location of Michigan's UP, combined with contact among English, Finnish, French, Anisinaabemowin and other languages, have shaped Yooper talk over the last 150 years. Kate Remlinger (PhD, MTU) will discuss the history and development of 'Yooper Talk' (the title of her book) and why it remains distinct from other varieties of American English.
Admission $6 public, $5 members
Come and see the expanded and remodeled museum displays, rescue boats and equipment. Docents present. A Coast Guard motor rescue boat from the Coast Guard station Portage, BMC Maria R. Collett in charge, will hold dockside tours beginning at noon. Refreshments available. Admission free.
The public is invited to see the recent upgrades of the expanded viewing area. It will also allow visitors to get up close to view equipment displayed. Coast Guard Station Portage will be sending up one of their Motor Life Boats for dockside tours from noon:-5:00pm, depending on weather conditions.
Church services at 9am and 11am. Cornish Tea at Central Visitor's Center 10am to 1pm
