    Hear about the people in the Keweenaw before the 1800’s mining rush. Who were they and what do we know about these early settlers and their lifeways? Learn about research on early Ojibwa settlements and trade, their relationship to the land and water, and their persistence on the landscape through and after the mining era.

    May 10, 1901. The Bon Voyage with a crew of 26 and 5 female passengers sailed out of Ontonagon Harbor enroute to Keweenaw ports. It would not arrive. Fire broke out off Redridge and raged out of control. Mystery surrounds the disaster and raises questions. Why did event accounts by the crew, the media & surviving female vary so significantly?

    Meet on the site of a field study investigating the history of mining at Delaware location from ancient to industrial periods. Students have undertaken excavations, environmental studies, experimental archaeology, lab analysis & experimental projects, and we will learn from their work. Join mining history enthusiasts for a look into our Keweenaw mining history.

    Jeremiah Mason, Pres., Gull Rock Lightkeepers

    Jeremiah, a descendant of the local lighthouse historied Corgan family, will outline the history of Keweenaw offshore lights to include Gull Rock, Manitou Island, and more, along with stories of the Corgan family, lighthouse keepers who were stationed at both lights from 1866 to 1883. Learn of current and future restoration efforts and plans.

    Using buildings from Eagle River and Copper Harbor as examples, Dr. Scarlett will talk about how archaeologists use construction, building techniques, and the materials of historic buildings to reconstruct the past thus revealing much about people's unrecorded daily routines. Building Archaeology will be highlighted at the annual conference of the Vernacular Architecture Forum, whose members will come from all over North America to Keweenaw in June 2024 to explore the history of the Copper Country.

    Enjoy a program exploring the diverse and colorful history of folk music in the region. Beginning with the traditions of the Anishinaabe contemporary folk, this multimedia presentation will both edify and entertain. Truckey, a songwriter, will perform as well as share field recordings from folklorists such as Frances Densmore, Alan Lomax & James P. Leary.

    Come and make cider from the heritage apples at Central. Pick your apples ahead of time and bring them to the event, or bring baskets to pick the apples at Central. Bring containers for the cider. Come at any time and enjoy the delicious taste of fresh cider. Wear sturdy walking shoes.
